Breakfast with Winnie. A beginner's guide. She always starts standing up. She'll be standing for her muesli, and perhaps the first few pages of the newspaper, as if ready to dash off at any moment. Only when she's moved on to her toast will she settle down - and then only by degrees. She won't be fully sitting and stationed and at ease until the very end of breakfast, at which point, as if provoked by the first signs and tingles of relaxation, she'll leap to her feet and say something along the lines of, 'Right, enough of that, time to crack on with the war.'
It was the above back cover blurb as well as the front cover and interesting title that drew me in and I'm so glad that I read this account of a most unlikely couple navigating a shared space amidst the beginning of the Covid 19 Pandemic. Through a programme entitled and run by https://www.shareandcare.co.uk/ Ben Aitken was matched with Winnie Carter, him a young, white and working class lad and her an 84 year old aristocrat. Despite the age and social differences an unlikely friendship formed and conversations, reflections and snippets were captured quite beautifully in Ben's diary entries. This book is well worth a read ❤️
More foraged apples from the next door neighbour's trees. We didn't bother weighing but there is easily another 13kg of apples in that bag and Ben has already stewed the first batch this morning.
Home made vegetable, sundried tomato and goats cheese pizzas courtesy of Pip. The inspiration for this tea was courtesy of a flier through our door but I couldn't justify the cost of £15.00 per pizza, so Pip decided to make her own and they were delicious.
I'm now on the sewing up part of my Land Girl vest. My MIL commented that the back was as neat as the front 😊
