Blog Housekeeping Headaches

My friend Penelope in America alerted me to the changes going on regarding Google+  I had wondered why she had been quiet over in this space and the reason being she was no longer able to leave comments!  I followed her instructions which should hopefully have worked but then I unearthed another slew of problems :-(

I am not a stats person and write here as a means of sharing with family and friends (some in real life and some on the net) so I have never taken a real look behind the scenes.  What I found today was quite disturbing and opened my eyes to the darker side of the interwebs.  I have two options one is to make this blog private which means folk have to sign in with an email address or the other is to close down this site and begin a new blog where I document our days minus the photos of the kids.  Any thoughts?

In addition I am also looking into doing what I have intended to do for a long time and make this blog into a book, so that Ben and Pip have a tangible record of our days these past ten years.

Right now I'm off to do another round of real life housekeeping :-)

As a total strange, enjying the look into another culture that your blog gives me, I would be treeibly sorry if you closed it down. I don't think I have ever commented before, but I've been following you and your family via this blog for years.

And what exactly did you discover to make you considre such dramatic measures? I have my own blog, with the occasional picture of me, chilren ect. Should I do the same. Please tekk a bit more.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. It was when I was switching back from Google+ to blogger that I actually looked at my stats and found three horrendous sites that have been looking at this blog. The individuals concerned have obviously not commented but I am concerned that they might have taken images of the kids and placed them on a dodgy site :-( I have no proof of this but when you see three websites of such a nature alarm bells begin to ring.

Right now I am thinking that it might be best to start a new blog that will remain in the public sphere but not post images of the kids. Either way I will keep those who read here updated and thank you for taking the time to read my posts :-)

No advice, if you only write, it will be more like Twitter. If you make it private, it will be harder to read the posts, even for people you have invited, and you might miss a chance of reaching out to people who benefit from your blog the way it is. There is a dangerous side to everything (I read about those very disturbing possibilities of what can happen to pictures on the net last year). But I am pretty sure that people who want to get to and misuse your pictures will be able to do so even when you make it private. There is no privacy online. But, in real life, a stranger may also take a picture of you, your children, etc., in the street without your knowledge and use it for bad purposes as well. There are so many surveillance cameras, especially in this country, and who knows what bad people might do with those images. So I think we are kind of "stuck."

I have always wanted to make a book out of my blog as well. I remember that Blogger used to offer an option like this. I am not sure if they still do.

We are off to church now because tomorrow Jonathan is leaving and we won't be able to attend Mass together.

Thanks for the input Eva :-) Your comments about pictures is a very interesting one and has reassured me if that makes sense! I won't be making the blog private and to be honest attempting to set up a new blog is extra hassle I could do without!

Will keep things as they are for the time being but will continue to pray about the matter. Hope you have a lovely last day with Jonathan xx

San {{hugs}} and prayers for you with all this blogging housecleaning! Thank you for changing the comment form as now, hooray, here I am.

One of the problems with making a blog invite only is that with blogger, the number is limited to 100. (Mind you, this would not be a problem for me personally, if I chose to go to invite-only, as at my blog I rarely crack twenty visitors per day. Bless. :-)

Now I looked at my stats as well, and found two of those, as you call them, dodgy websites looking to my blog. They have only been doing so for a week or so, so I suppose it is one of those "wave things". Some time ago somebody was commenting (with links to a bad place) on one of my posts like 50 times a day. I activated moderation for a week or so, when it stopped, I opened all gates again and went on.
I must say I agree with Eva and what she says on pictures and privacy. I would feel a bit like buckling or like giving in to terror if I stopped blogging because of a few scary people.

If you just look at the Blogger stats, they can be misleading! I have read several times that the people who supposedly look at your blog there, don't really exist, but somehow get into the Blogger stats so that you, the blog owner, click on their sites and end up looking at things you would rather not have known about. It is better to get different stats, like Stat Counter.

Thanks for that information :-)

I do hope that you don't close your blog. I have looked at my stats over the years and wondered what some websites might be but not seen anything that really looks dodgy- never wanted to go and click on anything just in case I end up somewhere I don't want to be. I've had so many pics on my blog I do wonder if anyone does anything with them?

Sandra Ann said...

No I won't be closing :-) It was a good exercise in being more informed though but as usual Eva always comes up trumps with a level headed response. love that gal! I also enjoy writing here when I get the chance. I'm still looking into saving the blog as a pdf and then making into a series of books for the kids. Digital copies are great but you cannot beat turning the pages of a book!

You have to let us know what service you are going to use for the pdf!

As here you have discussed housekeeping and when you need to hire any maid from maid agency then you can visit transfer maid agency singapore. Because of this the only place where they will give you surety for good maid services. Also, you don't need to think about hiring costs because you can get them just at a reasonable price.
