Milestones

Two weeks ago Benedict attended his very last appointment in the paediatric diabetes clinic.  As from now on he will be attending the diabetes hub in another part of the hospital.  We haven't been cast adrift without any support however, as his paediatric consultant and specialist nurse are still involved in his care until he is nineteen.  To mark the occasion, he kindly endured a silly selfie moment in the chidren's ward corridor, right in front of 'The Weaver' painting that featured in our very first December Photo Project many moons ago!

The next milestone involves a haircut and a city break in Edinburgh!  As I write Pip is attending her first ever trip away with Guides.  I dropped her off at the station for 6pm and will collect her around 5pm on Sunday.  On the way home Dave and I had a quiet meal in one of the local eateries nearby and Ben thoroughly enjoyed his curry for one complete with onion bahjis and an alcohol free beer!

Pip has been desperate for short hair and waited patiently for her hair appointment which was on Wednesday.  Lydia did a great job and not only does she suit it, her hair is much more manageable :-)

These photos were taken in the Salon whilst Lydia was also taking some photos to add to the Salon's photo gallery on social media.  She did ask my permission to take the photos and to share them.

All packed and ready to go!

Congratulations to both children! Does Benedict feel "old" now? Does he have to be more involved in his treatment now? Great haircut and I hope Pip will like her outing. You must feel almost like empty nesters now.

His challenge for the next three months is to remember to respond to the pump alarm informing him to do a set change. Unfortunately Ben really struggles with info overload and if he is in the middle of one task struggles to switch to another one mid flow. The team are aware of his learning issues and he has developed some great coping strategies but it will just take time. He has also been experiencing some dangerously low blood sugars and not picked up the warning signs which is a bit worrying :-( As always he remains his usual cheerful self xx

Big steps for you all. I hope over time Benedict is able to manage his own pump. I also hope that Pip has a great weekend in Edinburgh, a beautiful city with so many amazing things to do.

Good that he keeps cheerful through it all!

Guider has been posting photos on the groups' Facebook page, I reckon she will be shattered when I collect her this evening 🙂

Big milestones, all around! Learning to care for one's own special medical needs can be a steep learning curve! My 20yo has myriad challenges and it has been .... tricksey .... helping her to successfully navigate medical appointments and self care 'on her own', for the first time, these past couple of months ....

Sending prayers and good thoughts. I hope the weekend was wonderful for Pip, and a good respite for you, too :-)

I'm glad you and Dave had a nice quiet meal together, and Greg and I also enjoy alcohol free beer . . we especially like St. Pauli Girl and also Becks :) Such milestones, San! Congrats to all of you. I feel sure Ben will learn to juggle his important tasks . . you're right that it takes time. Of course, us moms tend to worry a lot. Sending all of you lots of love xoxoxo
